2009 IWMC SPEAKERS

Karen Davidson
Creative Director, General Merchandise
Harley-Davidson Motor Company
Karen Davidson has a strong natural instinct about the mystique of Harley-Davidson
from a lifetime of living the Harley-Davidson experience. Davidson, the great-granddaughter
of the company's co-founder, William A. Davidson, began riding at the age of nine.
As creative director for Harley-Davidson's General Merchandise Department, she's
constantly challenged with maintaining Harley-Davidson's distinctive reputation
and rich history as she directs design initiatives for Harley-Davidson's apparel
and accessory products.
Karen's transition from Fine Arts to Fashion Design in college was her lead into
the garment industry. She worked her way up in the garment industry at a fabric,
apparel and accessory company in New York to become director of marketing and design
for apparel. Never straying far from her love of motorcycles and leather apparel,
she began freelance leather design as a side business in 1985.
Karen officially joined the Harley-Davidson Motor Company in 1989 when Harley-Davidson
decided to expand its core offerings to its loyal customers by creating a branded
line of apparel and accessories – Harley-Davidson MotorClothes. Each year Karen
shapes the creative direction for apparel and accessory collections. Karen enjoys
working with functional riding apparel and has been involved with the creative direction
of all the leather collections since the launch of H-D MotorClothes. Today General
Merchandise's sales have increased ten-fold since 1989.
In 1991, the Council of Fashion Designers of America in New York bestowed the prestigious
industry award to Karen and Harley-Davidson for fashion influence.
"The most important thing for me is to never to lose sight of our core customer.
In keeping with our motorcycles perfect blend of artistry in iron, MotorClothes
combines authenticity with rugged versatility," says Davidson.
Karen lives in California and has established an office in one of the motorcycling
"hubs" of the U.S. She is dedicated to supporting Harley-Davidson MDA fundraising
efforts and dealer events. For relaxation, Karen and her husband enjoy long distance
motorcycle trips.

Ashley Fiolek
Opening Ceremonies
Ashley has had a love for dirt bikes since she was three years old and her mom and
dad (a racer himself) bought her a Yamaha PW50. The Fiolek family all trail rode
together in the woods of northern Michigan with Ashley tucked into the front of
the motorcycles with either her mother or father. When she finally started to ride
by herself, she fell in love with everything about it.
Ashley started getting really involved with racing when she was 7 years old. Her
first race was at a local track in Michigan. Ashley was born profoundly deaf and
about the same time that she started racing, the family realized they would have
to move to seek out a better school for her. As a family, they decided to move to
Florida so Ashley could ride all year round and also attend the Florida School for
the Deaf and Blind. Every weekend they went to the track to ride, race and practice.
Ashley has been involved with racing for 11 years now. Jim, Ashley's dad, was her
“coach” and trainer and Roni, Ashley's mom, traveled with them, cheering Ashley
on and taking care of the small stuff. Ashley has traveled all over the United States
to participate in amateur and now national pro races. Ashley and her dad have also
made numerous trips to Europe and Japan to compete in international women's racing.
Ashley has 13 amateur national titles and many years of fun tucked under her belt
at the young age of 18. Last year, 2008, was Ashley's rookie year as a professional
women's motocross racer and she won the championship. She became the first female
to be part of the American Honda Red Bull Factory Race Team and is now leading the
points race for the 2009 series championship.

and road racer; worked three decades in the field of vehicular crash investigation
and reconstruction; worked many years as motorcycle tester/editor/contributor for
various motorcycle publications as well as teaching all types of riding, from dirt
to street to racetrack.

Michael and Debbie Gardner
Seminar: Survive Institute
Debbie and Mike met at the Cincinnati Police Academy in 1973. Due to life-threatening
personal challenges, they were forced to respectfully question traditional self-defense
techniques that emphasized complication instead of simple truths. In a crisis, the
Gardners learned that 'less is more when less is right!'
The Gardners have been keynote speakers for corporations, conventions and colleges
across the United States, Canada, Australia, Central Europe, Central and South America.
Debbie and Mike were recently honored by a White House invitation to join the President
and Mrs. Bush at a private conference on school safety. They’ve written three books,
created safety videos and developed a PBS TV show. They have been featured in local
and national newspapers, magazines, radio and TV shows, including the Later Today
Show, Bill O'Reilly’s Factor, Montel and the Jerry Springer show.
Debbie and Mike are the parents of a 28-year-old daughter and a 21-year-old son,
who will tell you their parents are the 'nicest' and 'scariest'
parents on the planet. Fasten your emotional seat-belts as the Gardners electrify
you with new, updated safety information that will teach you how to be courageous.

Kay Gilletly
Seminar: Secrets of Veteran Riders: Lessons from the Road
Kay has been riding for more than 15 years. Her first
bike was an Ultra Classic, and she has ridden approximately 100,000 miles. Kay is
a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoach in Ohio and is actively involved
in the Harley-Davidson Rider's Edge program, serving as both a RiderCoach and a
Network Quality Instructor. She supports motorcycling with memberships with AMA
and HOG and is a past chapter director for the Central Ohio Chapter of Women on
Wheels. She loves to ride and to facilitate new students in learning safe riding
skills, especially other women riders. Her current rides are a 1997 Ultra Classic
and a 2003 V-Rod, and she is proud to have participated in four out of the five
AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conferences.

Deborah Grey
Keynote Speaker: International Street Party
Deborah Grey, dubbed “The First Lady of Reform,” began her history-making political
career by winning a by-election in Beaver River, Alberta, Canada on March 13, 1989.
She became the Reform Party’s first-ever Member of Parliament, and sat as its sole
M.P. for four and a half years. Her media presence and parliamentary debating skills
earned her national respect over 15 years of public service.
She served as Caucus Chairman, Deputy Leader and Leader of the Opposition. Her trademark
communication style combines clarity, passion and humour. Her keen interest in people
and her common-sense approach to issues have earned her a reputation as one of Canada’s
most effective parliamentarians.
In December 2007, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her distinguished
record of public service and for her advocacy on behalf of youth and education,
as a foster parent, teacher, parliamentarian and public speaker.
As a truth-teller, Deb also delves into the fundamentals of human interaction and
relationships. Deb will challenge you to re-evaluate where you are and where you
are headed. Her years of teaching, experience in the House of Commons and extensive
media work have given her a practical knowledge of political science and made her
a master in communications.
Her energetic delivery and fondness for young people enable her to transform theory
into relevant and practical applications. She is an excellent facilitator and can
chair meetings. She excels at ones that require a firm hand and an ability to manage
conflicting interests and egos. Her no-nonsense approach, humour and ability to
think on her feet have contributed to her being sought after for panels, documentaries
and as an inspirational speaker.

Barb Grueschow
Seminar: Preparing for the Ride: Packing/Gear/Apparel
Barb Grueschow's addiction to motorcycling started as a mild case in 1973, commuting
to work and accomplishing light errands. After completing a long-distance trip and
experiencing the joys of touring, the hook was set and to date her wheels have rolled
over nearly a half a million miles. Grueschow joined Women On Wheels in 1992, and
has served on the board of trustees and also as president. She has also served as
a co-instructor for accident scene management classes, a co-presenter for strategic
riding strategies seminars, and as a judge for international drill team competitions.
As a dedicated member of the AMA’s International Women & Motorcycling Conference
Advisory Council, her addiction to the sport of motorcycling, and just about everything
connected to it, is being fulfilled.

Erin Hunter
Seminar: Great Stories to Take Your Riding to the Next Level
Erin has accomplished many firsts for women in the sport of Landspeed racing. In
2008 she became the first and only woman to set a World land-speed record in a motorcycle
streamliner, taking Jack Costella's "Nebulous Theorem IV" to a blazing
speed of 146 mph with her nose literally one-half inch off the Bonneville Salt Flats.
She is also the only woman to race for an unofficial "two-up" tandem record
of 170 mph riding shotgun as Andy Sills piloted a BMW K1200 S on The Salt. In September
2009, Erin will be racing a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 for the 1,000cc Production World Record,
striving for more than 193 mph.
Erin is also proud to be the founder of the sheEmoto Award, which she bestows on
the female LSR racer who best embodies what it means to break a World Record. The
award, which she began in 2006, provides $1,000 for the woman who best exemplifies
the spirit of LSR and an additional $1,000 for whomever she cites as the "encouragement"
in her life. Erin began this award with two purposes: to encourage women to participate
in the sport and to acknowledge people who break down barriers for women.
"I am grateful to have accomplished a lot in my life, and I owe this success
to people who never said ‘ girls don't do that,' but instead always said
‘go for it!'" Erin says.
When not riding in triple-digits across the open roads of the High Sierra Desert,
Erin manages the media business as executive vice president of comScore Inc. and
resides in San Francisco, Calif.

Carla King
Seminar: Solo Riding and Touring: Gaining Confidence in Taking to the Open Road
Carla travels the world on various and sometimes unreliable motorcycles, sending
dispatches live to her website from the road. Her book, American Borders, tells
the story of her solo-journey around the United States, test riding the Russian
Ural motorcycle for the American market, during which time she became both a better
journalist and a better mechanic. Her dispatches from solo motorcycle misadventures
in India, Europe, China, and Africa can be found on her website at CarlaKing.com.

Heather Lewis
Seminar: Dual-Sport and Adventure Riding
Heather Lewis grew up going to the desert and started riding as a little girl, first
riding with her dad as early as age two, then on her own machine, an Honda ATC.
When her dad saw she liked the motorized fun, he got her a Kawasaki KDX 80.
Since her family was heavily involved in AMA District 37 Desert Racing, it was natural
that Heather took to that too. At age 13, she entered her first race on her KDX
with her brother following her around the course to make sure she made it all the
way. That wasn't a problem, and it wasn't long after that her father gave
Heather his old race bike, a Husqvarna 250. Not only a huge jump in machinery, but
maybe a big mistake too.
Heather actually met her husband, Jimmy, at the races, when he pulled up to the
little girl on the way too big of a bike and said, "That's too much bike
for you, you'd be better off on a KDX200."
That sparked a friendship. Even more than a boyfriend, Heather found a riding coach.
Since Jimmy was racing professionally at the time, riding was always part of the
agenda, even if Heather's racing was only part-time at best. She has competed
in lots of desert races, including rounds of the AMA National Hare & Hound Championship
Series, races like the 6-, 12- and 24-hours of Glen Helen, the Tecate Hare Scrambles
and even completed some of the mock-training rallies her husband used while training
for the Dakar. She found she truthfully liked helping the competitors more than
racing with them.
Today, Heather mostly rides for fun and particularly enjoys riding in the thick
forest and in deep-tall walled desert canyons. Together with Jimmy, they run an
off-road riding school when their hectic work schedules (hers: forensic scientist;
his: editor of Dirt Rider Magazine) allow some free time (that they spend on riding
trips!).

Deb Lower
Seminar: Secrets of Veteran Riders: Lessons from the Road
Deb Lower's riding experience began, like many other women, when she met someone
who rode. He had a BMW motorcycle and was heading off from Muscatine, Iowa, to California
the next day. Following that trip, she rode on the back of his bike until she decided
to learn to ride herself. After lessons on his brother's early '70s Honda SL350,
she took the Iowa driving test and passed (after three tries!). Many lessons followed
before her next bike, a 1976 BMW R75/6. From there, she became involved in riding
and rallying and volunteering.
Over 30 years later, Lower has achieved 500,000 miles on BMW motorcycles, served
as president, vice president, secretary and treasure of the largest BMW motorcycle
owners' organization in the world, BMW MOA, and has chaired two International
Rallies: Moodus, Conn., and Gillette, Wy. She will chair the 2010 BMW MOA Rally
in Redmond, Ore., July 15-18 with an anticipated attendance of 7,000 enthusiasts.
Lower enjoys all types of motorcycle racing and has even competed in vintage road
racing on an early 1970s BMW R50.
To pay for her intense interest and involvement with motorcycling, she found work
as an assistant professor of sociology at UW-Eau Claire, hoping to have summers
off to ride, although she really didn't make enough money to do that on a continuous
basis. She then shifted careers into positions with state and local governments
in human services before becoming director at a small consulting firm. She rides
as often as she can and works hard to break down the sometimes negative stereotype
of motorcyclists. Through her years of riding and the numerous miles she's put on
my bikes, she's always believed in wearing "All The Gear, All The Time."

Janette Pawliske
Seminar: Motorcycle Mentoring
In 1995 Janette took a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) rider safety course and
was immediately drawn into the sport of motorcycling. Shortly thereafter, in 1996,
she purchased her first motorcycle. Without a mentor or riding coach readily available,
she experienced a steep, sometimes expensive learning curve as she experimented
with riding technique and equipment. Her initial experiences, which she later found
were very similar to many new riders without proper guidance, made her realize the
importance of riding instructors, coaches and mentors for new riders. Armed with
that knowledge and her natural desire to assist others, she made the decision to
become a rider safety instructor. Since 1998, she has been a certified MSF instructor
and enjoys helping both new and experienced riders improve their skills and gain
confidence. As she meets people and listens to their stories, she is inspired by
their enthusiasm and she hopes that her passion for the sport inspires them in return.
To her, riding is a form of religion; one that only those who are a part of it truly
understand.
Janette has been with Harley-Davidson for eight years with most of them in the Rider’s
Edge department. In 2001, as a Rider’s Edge Lead Instructor, she traveled the country
consulting on the quality of safety courses and start-up initiatives with dealerships.
Since then, she’s held several roles to support dealer training, operations and
growth of the business. Recently, Janette has taken on a new position as a Service
Operations Area Representative. In this role, she primarily consults with dealers
on service business performance and service strategies. Janette currently owns a
1999 FXR2 but has had the privilege of putting several miles on her past 2005 and
2007 Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycles.

Kathy Jo Porter
Seminar: Dealer Interaction
Kathy began riding motorcycles at 9 years old when her dad bought her a Honda CT
70, which she still has. It was a while later, in about 1990, when a boyfriend (now
husband and business partner, David) encouraged her to get a streetbike. They found
a Ducati 160 Monza Jr. that was a perfect fit, and it was her daily ride for two
years. It was a fun, confidence-inspiring little bike; and she found herself becoming
fully immersed in the history and legacy that surrounded Ducati.
In 2000, she and David moved from Seattle to Idaho and worked at a large dealership
for a year, but it was clear that they had our own ideas about how things should
work. So, in 2001, they moved to Bend, Ore., and started a small, independent repair
shop in a 1,250 square foot space. By 2005, they expanded to a larger location and
campaigned heavily to Ducati for a franchise opportunity. Since then, they have
grown to add Husqvarna, Vespa and Genuine Scooter, but their heart and focus is
Ducati streetbikes.
Kathy and David take pride in their dealership because it is truly a grassroots
operation that they built themselves, from the design of the showroom to the philosophy
of their employees. They have enjoyed recognition from Ducati North America, Dealernews
magazine, and their local Motorcycle Safety Program, but what sets them apart is
that they have been enthusiasts longer than dealership owners. It's important that
their customers trust that they are getting advice from motorcycle experts, not
someone hired to look up parts and sell motorcycles.

Leslie Prevish
Opening/Closing Ceremonies
Leslie oversees the women’s outreach initiatives for Harley-Davidson Motor Company.
In this role she is responsible for developing and managing the company’s strategies
by collaborating with resources from across the Motor Company to initiate women’s
market discussions, share findings and develop effective plans to grow the number
of women riders. In addition, she manages initiatives to strengthen relationships
with existing female riders and cultivate their passion for Harley-Davidson. Her
role also includes providing dealers with appropriate resources and training to
ensure effective and targeted local efforts.
Leslie has held a variety of positions with Harley-Davidson over the last 11 years,
many of which included public relations for Harley-Davidson products and services.
She managed the Buell Riders Adventure Group and was the editor of the company’s
Enthusiast magazine, which was distributed to more than one million riders worldwide.
Prior to joining the Motor Company, she worked in promotions and sales at A.D. Farrow’s
Harley-Davidson in Columbus, Ohio. She’s been a rider for 20 years, enjoying the
speed of the racetrack as well as relaxing, solo motorcycle trips in Europe. She
owns a 2008 Buell Ulysses XT and also loves riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles during
her work travels.
She earned a B.A. in Communication from the University of Dayton, an M.A. in Italian
from Ohio State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Lois Pryce
Keynote Speaker: Closing Ceremonies
Back in 2003, weary of the daily grind in jargon-infested London media-land, Lois
Pryce jacked in her job at the BBC to ride from 20,000 miles Alaska to the tip of
South America astride her Yamaha dirtbike. Upon her return, she wrote the book of
this trip, "Lois on the Loose," which was published in the United States
and the United Kingdom and translated into several languages.
Itchy wheels struck again, and it wasn't long before she was plotting another
adventure. In October 2006 she set off once more, this time to ride the length of
Africa from London to Cape Town, crossing the Sahara Desert and continuing down
the west coast through the Congo and Angola to South Africa. Four months and 10,000
miles later she rolled into Cape Town just about in one piece, having tackled Kalashnikov-wielding
soldiers and Angolan minefields along the way. Her book of this awesome adventure,
"Red Tape & White Knuckles", was published in 2008.
This summer (2009) she and her husband, 'round-the-world motorcyclist and filmmaker
Austin Vince, are taking it easy and riding a 2WD Ural sidecar outfit across the
USA.
When she's not on the road, Lois lives in London, England, with Austin aboard
a vintage Dutch sailing barge.

Brenda Hickling-Thatcher
Seminar: Secrets of Veteran Riders: Lessons from the Road
Seminar: Preparing for the Ride: Packing/Gear/Apparel
Brenda Thatcher was born in Toledo, Ohio. She started racing quarter midget race
cars at age 3, and drove them until she was 16. Throughout this period she always
played on dirtbikes as well. Thatcher needed something to fill the void when she
retired from car racing, and she soon came to love motorcycling as much as she did
midget racing. Today, Thatcher is a 20-year member of the Motor Maids, and has been
their president for the last seven years. She has put approximately 300,000 miles
on her motorcycles. She is devoted to helping the motorcycling industry, especially
women in motorcycling, and offers seminars to help other motorcyclists on subjects
such as "Packing for a Long Trip" (small bike and large bike), "How
to Maintain Your Motorcycle and Yourself for a Long Trip," "Roadside Quick
Fixes," "Things You Should Always Carry On Your Motorcycle" and "Basic
Maintenance."

CEO. Prior to starting BikeBandit.com, Ken was with Gateway Computers in San Diego
where he managed treasury operations. He oversaw commercial banking relationships,
short-term investments, foreign exchange, credit analysis/facilities and cash operations/forecasting.
Prior to joining Gateway Computers, Ken was with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals: in New
York working on structured finance, transfer pricing, tax planning and venture capital
investments and in Dublin, Ireland, working on treasury systems, credit analysis,
international fixed-income investments and cash/short-term commercial paper investments.

BS in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh and an MBA from The Pennsylvania
State University in Finance. Out of the office, Ken is an avid motorcyclist participating
in events throughout the western United States and Mexico, a twin-engine instrument
rated pilot and enjoys spending time with his family/dogs (including the real Bandit).
After a successful career working for several Fortune 500 companies, Ken decided
to build a new kind of Internet company that focused on customer service, order
accuracy and time to delivery. All of these concepts were basic tenets of successful
offline companies, but absent in both the online and powersports market at the time.
Leaving his position with Gateway Computers and drawing on his extensive experience
both working in the powersports industry and as a powersports enthusiast, he launched
the website BikeBandit.com in 1999 from
his home in La Jolla, Calif. Since then, he has successfully grown the company,
becoming a leader in the industry.
Ken has been featured in "entrepreneurial profiles" in several publications
and has been asked to speak at several business schools about the Internet business
and entrepreneurial enterprise.
The company's website BikeBandit.com
has more than 8 million items for sale, most of which will ship to the customer
in 24 to 48 hours. In 2008, BikeBandit.com was ranked as one of the 500 largest
Internet retailers ( ranked No. 301 according to the "Internet Retailer Top
500") and expects to climb in the rankings again in 2009.
